We usually try to limit family contact during the detox process and let the clients take this time to themselves. That being said, we can update families on their loved ones’ progress during the detox stage. After detox, clients will have more opportunities to communicate and interact with their families.

Make note that we almost always solicit the family’s input prior to starting treatment with a new client – to help us customize his or her recovery plan. We see addiction recovery as a family-wide process, so their involvement is paramount.

We have a detox program that lasts 7 to 10 days. Medications are administered on a taper system, with the dosage determined by a licensed physician. The duration of detox is determined by appointment.

Medicines that may be administered include:

  • Methadone – Used strictly to detox from heavy methadone use. The dose is gradually reduced until the client no longer requires the medication.
  • Hydroxyzine – Aids in the reduction of anxiety symptoms.
  • Subutex – This medication treats agitation, anxiety, muscle aches, a runny nose, yawning, sweating, and cramping.
  • Ambien – A short-term sleep aid used during detox.

Valerian root and melatonin may be prescribed to aid the client’s sleep.

During the detox process, we usually try to limit family contact and give the clients time to themselves. Having said that, we can provide families with updates on their loved one’s progress during the detox stage. Clients will have more opportunities to connect and interact with their families after detox.

It is worth noting that we almost always seek the family’s input before beginning treatment with a new client to help us personalize their recovery plan. We view addiction recovery as a family-wide process, so their participation is pivotal.

We work with a licensed doctor who can prescribe medication if necessary to alleviate the discomfort of withdrawal and assist the client in safely discontinuing drugs. We also have a nurse and other medical experts on staff to help with any other areas of care required during the detox period.
